My family has been collecting antiques of all types for over 35 years now. I started going to auctions and flea markets as a young kid with my grandparents and mom, dad and sisters. My parents would collect antique clocks, (Seth Thomas, Gilbert, regulators, double dial calendar clocks, etc) Steiff teddy bears and may other things. My grandmother always had several silver and glass pieces including countless sets of salt and pepper shakers. The best part of all the glass and cookware was that she displayed and used them. I didn’t think much of it was a child but when I was older I appreciated the value of what I was collecting more when I used it and not just letting it collect dust on a shelf.
If can be fun going to estate sales, garage or yard sales searching for whatever you like to collect. Maybe you’ll find something unusual that you end up buying because you like it. Antique auctions are a great place to go when you’re getting started with the “collecting hobby”. But be careful, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and over-pay for something you bid on. Many collections are started by accident this way, I know, because I’ve seen it. Antique Salt and pepper shakers are common spice dispenser people use almost every day. Every person I know has at least one pair around the kitchen or dining table. Why not find some vintage shakers and start your own collection with something you can use too.
The video is a neat look at someones collection of vintage salt and pepper shaker sets turned into a museum. Several collectable rare vintage S&P shakers to see for hours on end. Years ago before the internet, it was more time consuming to research the makers or manufactures, prices or value, and learning “how important condition is and quantity produced” of a particular antique salt and pepper shaker. Most often you could go to your public library and look up information on the maker of the shaker and some history. But you would need to go into a book store to find a reference guide for antiques that would tell you current prices, rarity, etc. People would also attend antique shows where hundreds of dealers from all-over display their items for sale. This was the best way to cover a lot of items in one day.
Now with sites like eBay, craigslist, other online classifieds, you can find what you’re looking for very easy and without spending a ton of time traveling. However, traveling is fun too if you take an antique road trip back east (USA) or into Canada to collector “hot-spots” for antiquing. You should be able to find a new set of antique salt and pepper shakers to add to your collection here or at the next yard sale. Good luck and happy hunting!
